Foyle Young People Enjoy Residential Trip

On 19th August five young people from Foyle Young People’s project attended a 2 day residential at Greencastle Cove holiday village in Co Donegal. The group were accompanied by three staff.

Greencastle Cove is made up of log cabins and has a range of on-site activities including football and tennis facilities. It also has a restaurant and is situated on the coastal area with numerous beaches. We hired two cabins where all young people had adequate accommodation. One cabin was used for cooking.

The residential had been planned for some time and was funded by WHSCT and Praxis Care. For all young people it was their summer holiday.

The residential started with a football match, staff versus residents! Staff beat the residents by a goal or two!

An activity programme had been agreed with all young people in advance which included a beach excursion and a mini canoeing expedition.

Both staff and young people participated in canoeing activity the following morning which proved a challenging experience for both young people and staff!

Fortunately the weather was dry and bright which made the daytrip to Kinnego Bay more enjoyable.

Other activities included tennis, basketball, games and Karaoke!

The residential received great feedback from both young people and staff who would like it to be a regular feature. Young people particularly enjoyed spending time with the staff outside of the Project.

Some young people’s feedback included:

‘It was good craic’

‘It was relaxing, I developed new team building skills and got to know other residents and the manager outside the office’

Let’s hope we can do it all again in 2010!
