Publicity for Blooms Café
Blooms Café on the Walls has been receiving publicity in the Derry News. Below are copies of articles written by Melissa Towell in July highlighting the work of the coffee shop and the celebration of “Bloom’s Day”
Blooming great success for local cafe
Staff at a local cafe which supports people with learning disabilities has got plenty to celebrate this week. Not only was it Bloom’s Day on Tuesday after which the café is named, the bistro has also recently extended its opening hours. The cafe is now open until 4 o’clock Monday to Thursday, 3 o’clock on Friday and is open 10am to 3pm on Saturday’s.
Blooms cafe in the Verbal Arts Centre is run in support of Praxis Care which works with people with learning disabilities. Participants from the scheme are trained in food preparation and hygiene and have all their catering qualifications, prior to starting work there.
The cafe itself takes its name after Molly Bloom the central character in the James Joyce book ‘Ulysses’. Extracts from the book are up inside and staff dressed up for the occasion on Tuesday.
Manager of the premises Caroline Morewood: “Everyone really enjoyed the day as it was something a bit different. We also do other signature days throughout the year such as 4th July and we put on special menus for the different occasions.”
She added what makes Blooms extra special is that it is a non profit bistro and everything is made fresh in the mornings: “We offer very reasonable prices and the opportunity to support a local charity. The products are also hand made daily and we stock tray bakes from the Foyle Cookie Company.”
If you would like more information about events coming up in the cafe why not call in and have a chat with staff.
Get out and support Blooms
Blooms cafe is a real hidden treasure on the walls of the city. It is a located within the Verbal Arts Centre and it supports local people with learning disabilities.
The concept of Blooms is unique in that is a non profit organisation with proceeds going into Praxis Care and the charity work it does.
If you are up there early in the morning there’s nothing better than a cup of tea or coffee and a tray bake from the Foyle Cookie Company, another group supported by Praxis Care. They also prepare home made broths daily as well as other household favourites.
But the best thing about Blooms café is the atmosphere inside. There are staff there who look forward to coming to work every day and are delighted to see you when you call in. The prices are also very reasonable and you can leave thinking you have done your bit for charity.
As well as having an ideal location the cafe is also steeped in history with the extracts from James Joyce’s book Ulysses on the walls.
So with longer opening hours now and great service we should all do our bit to support it.
