A campaign which aims to publicise the value of the Supporting People programme in Northern Ireland has recently commenced, with a coalition of charities and voluntary organisations taking part, including Praxis Care.
The campaign seeks to secure the continued protection of individuals with mental ill-health and learning disabilities by keeping Supporting People as a properly funded, dedicated housing support programme.
Supporting People funds a range of housing related support services to improve the quality of life of individuals. Currently the programme provides some 882 housing related support services across Northern Ireland and equips people to live independently and helps prevent problems that can result in hospitalisation, institutionalisation or homelessness.
Currently the Supporting People programme is subject to a government review, and providers are concerned about the potential impact of impending spending cuts. Without strong measures in place to protect services, there is a distinct danger that those in most need may lose out and have their services reduced or cut.
Praxis Care is the largest recipient of Supporting People funding in Northern Ireland, supporting over 40 projects across the province, including mental health, learning disability, and older people services.
