World Mental Health Day '09

Praxis Care, Northern Ireland’s largest charity and a major provider of mental health services hosted an event to support and promote World Mental Health Day 2009.

Coffee, cookies and a chat, just one way to help your mental health!

Tea, coffee and cookies, all prepared by some of our service users were served to guests at the Praxis Care event marking World Mental Health Day. Special information leaflets were handed out with tips for looking after your mental health.

Nevin Ringland, Chief Executive of Praxis care said:

‘I would urge our local politicians to take positive steps to addressing mental health illnesses by ensuring it is treated as primary health care provision and is treated as equally as any other illness’.

World Mental Health Day (Sat Oct 10th) has been designated by World Health Organisation as a Global day to highlight to the general public the issue of mental health. This year the day is designed to promote the theme of ‘Mental Health in Primary Care’, enhance treatment and promote good mental health.

Research indicates that up to 1 in 4 people will have a mental health issue sometime in their lives.

Famous people like Winston Churchill, Paul Merton, Spike Milligan and Ronnie O’Sullivan have all had mental health issues.

At present 450 million people world wide have mental illness

There are many different types of mental illness including anxiety, neurosis, depression, psychosis, bi polar disorder and schizophrenia.
