Praxis Care is Northern Ireland’s largest charity that provides care and support to 1432 children and adults with a learning disability, mental ill health, acquired brain injury and dementia in Ireland, Isle of Man and the UK.
Praxis Care hosted a celebration event in the Burnavon Centre in Cookstown on Friday 28th May to mark and celebrate the end of the Praxis Outreach Service which has been run by Praxis Care for the last three years.
Praxis Outreach Service has been operating within the Magherafelt and Cookstown district council areas since June 2007 which has been developed with £84,700 from the Big Lottery Fund. The project has promoted mental health awareness, identified support mechanisms within the community and provided one to one support to individuals 18-65 years old who were experiencing mental health issues and has targeted individuals living in rural areas that may be at risk or vulnerable.
Through the work of the outreach service there has been an identified need to provide longer term support for male individuals within the local area. A male support group was established and runs in addition to the outreach service and provides direct support to 15 individuals per month and focuses on promoting mental health and wellbeing.
Martin Mc Daid, Outreach worker says:
“Over the past three years the outreach service has been a valuable resource for individuals in the area and we have successfully worked with other local organisations in raising mental health awareness within the community. We have provided direct one to one support to 146 individuals as well as providing telephone support and advice to many other people. One of the main benefits has been that the service has been used by several individuals and their families as a first point of contact which has enabled us to identify the level of risk and provide vulnerable individuals with immediate support.”
Frank Hewitt, Big Lottery Fund NI Chair, said, “The Big Lottery Fund’s Voluntary and Community Sector programme has had a major impact across both rural and urban communities in Northern Ireland.
“The Praxis Care Outreach service has raised mental health awareness and provided outreach support for people most in need in the Magherafelt and Cookstown District Council Areas.
