Alan Hunter is a solicitor educated at Queen’s University Belfast. Following a period of practice, he joined the Government Legal Service as Legislative Draftsman in 1988 and subsequently the Northern Ireland Courts Service in 1990, where he had responsibility for working on policy and legislative initiatives. He was appointed Chief Executive of the Law Society of Northern Ireland in October 2007. Previously he held a series of key positions in the Senior Civil Service, including the Director of Legal Aid, Director of Judicial Services and Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission.
Working with Presidents and the Council of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, he has led the development and delivery of an engagement strategy with members and key interested parties, including members of the Northern Ireland Assembly and others in civic society. He has overseen organisational reviews of the Society and the introduction of the ISO quality standard, as well as led several initiatives in relation to regulation of the profession. He is presently leading a Governance Review of the Society looking at how the organisation streamlines its decision making processes, discharges its statutory functions and fulfils its strategic objectives.
He has also been involved in overseeing the return of the Law Society to the new Law Society House situated in the heart of the legal quarter in Belfast City Centre.
Mr Hunter was appointed to the Board of Praxis Care in 2017 and is also a member of the Governance Committee.
