Praxis Care launches their Praxis Care Sponsored Read It! Campaign for 2014 at Waterstones Store, Lisburn with local writers Derek Keilty, Sheena Wilkinson, teachers and pupils from Mercy College, Saintfield High School and Edmund Rice College.
The Read It! Campaign will run 1- 31 October in line with Children’s Book Week and World Mental Health Day on 10th October. Praxis Care are asking schools, children and young people to read as many books as possible whilst raising funds for Praxis Care. Children and young people will be encouraged to experience and explore the imaginative and creative world of books.
Praxis Care Sponsored Read It! has successfully ran over the last three years and it has been supported by 56 schools, 7,500 children and young people from Ireland, UK and the Isle of Man who have raised over £40,000 to date. Praxis Care Sponsored Read 2012 won the Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland Event of the Year Award as it demonstrated creativity and excellence in fundraising.
The Praxis Care Sponsored Read It! Campaign brings benefit to pupils and schools as it encourages children to read books, increase their literacy skills while raising awareness of mental illness.

Praxis Care is Northern Ireland largest care charity providing care and support to over 1500 adults and children with learning disability, mental ill health and acquired brain injury in Ireland, UK and the Isle of Man.
Since the publication of the internationally multi-award-winning YA novel, Taking Flight (Dublin, Little Island) in 2010, Sheena Wilkinson has established herself as one of the most acclaimed Irish writers for young people. Taking Flight won two CBI awards (The Honour Award for Fiction and the Children’s Choice Award); a White Raven Award from the International Youth Library; an IBBY Honour Listing, and it was shortlisted for the Reading Association of Ireland Awards 2011.
The follow-up Grounded also won two CBI awards, including the overall Book of the Year, and like its predecessor the Children’s Choice award. Sheena is the only author to have won the Children’s Choice award twice. It was also shortlisted for the Reading Association of Ireland Awards 2013.
Her latest novel, Too Many Ponies, is for slightly younger readers, and has also been shortlisted for the CBI Awards, making that three out of three!
Only two years after the publication of her first novel, Sheena was granted a Major Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, its highest award, given to artists of national and international importance.
Sheena travels extensively meeting readers in Ireland, England and beyond. She is the inaugural Bringing to Book Writer in Residence at the Church of Ireland College of Education in Dublin.
She has also won many awards for short stories, and her forthcoming publication is a story in The Great War, an anthology of stories about World War One, which will be published by Walker in July 2014. A new YA novel will be published by Little Island in February 2015.
Derek Keilty, Will Gallows and the Snake-Bellied Troll are Derek’s debut novel for children although, previously, he has published several educational books. Derek first book in the Will Gallows series, Will Gallows And The Snake- Bellied Troll, was shortlisted for the Children’s Book Ireland Book of the Year 2012. Elton John production company Rocket Pictures has also bought the film rights.
Derek Keilty He began writing in 2000 as a new millennium resolution and hasn’t looked back. Currently, he has a thriving schools program, storytelling and taking creative writing workshops around local schools.
