Praxis Care Befriending Volunteers from across Belfast gathered for some team building and a Christmas lunch on Tuesday 9th December 2014.
With Befriending volunteers meeting on a one to one basis with their Praxis Care friend or Befriendee it is important that volunteers get to know each other, have time to learn from each other, share their stories and reflect on their roles.
The group got together to think about some of the highlights they have experienced in their befriending matches over the last few months, they thought about what would make the befriending role better and then what training or events would be helpful over the next few months.
All of the volunteers can see the impact of their involvement with their Praxis Care friend, there are many highlights including building up a friendship, seeing the confidence of their befriendee grow, helping to promote an increased sense of independence, rediscovering new interests and ultimately helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
The group also came up with ideas for things which would improve their befriending experience like having more regular meetings with the other volunteers as well as opportunities for events with their befriendees. Further ideas for additional training were also discussed.
Lunchtime provided more opportunities for chatting and sharing of ideas and experiences.
Each one of these volunteers makes a huge difference to the lives of their Praxis Care friend, providing a listening and encouraging ear to help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Praxis Care Befriending is part of the Together For You project which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
