To celebrate University Mental Health Day 2018 (UMHD18), Praxis Care hosted a range of events across Ulster University Campuses and Queens University Students Union to promote the mental health of people who live, work and study in higher education.
The theme for this years’ University Mental Health Day focused on Community. For many young people, their time at university are the first years they will spend away from established networks of family support. This can be a risk factor for developing mental health difficulties. Praxis Care wanted to actively encourage staff and students to learn more about mental health with the aim of empowering all members of the university community to be active in supporting better student mental health.
Geoff Bunting, Praxis Care Assistant Manager of Coleraine and Magherafelt Domiciliary Service, was involved with the events on UMHD18 and commented:
“Students themselves have identified that being away from home, there is a potential to become isolated and lose those important support networks such as family and friends.
There is a staggering statistic which states that 75% of mental health problems start in the mid-20’s, and so this is applicable to a lot of young who are in that period of studying at University. We want to make young people aware of that difficulty and encourage them to tap into the many resources and services available, both in their university and also in the wider community for mental health support.
We believe that volunteering is one way you can tap into your local community. Praxis Care’s Befriending Scheme is a great opportunity to become involved in the community and support someone who is coming through a difficulty with mental health problems, but it is also a great way of improving your own mental wellbeing.”
All events were very well received and it was a great way to get the conversation started on mental health.
