Five Praxis Care service users from The Hub, Drogheda have been won the prestigious Gaisce – President’s Awards (Bronze).
The individuals were Maria Mulvin, Cormac Corboy, Donal Durnin, Kevin Nolan and Chloe Tallon, are past pupils of the Drogheda ABACAS School for Children with Autism or St. Mary’s Special School, Drumcar and have since graduated to the Praxis Care Service Centre at “The Hub”, Drogheda which is on the Boyne RFC campus.
To win the award, all five had to undertake 13 weeks of Community Involvement, Physical Recreation and Personal Skills as taking part in a residential.
Maria Whelan The Hub Temporary Manager Dunboyne Day Services Manager says
“Each of the service users attends The Hub day care in Drogheda on a full time basis Monday to Friday. Each has a diagnosis of Autism and Intellectual disability as well as complex needs. For many of the group staying away from home, particularly without family was an immense achievement.”
‘The Hub’ aims to enable school leavers with complex needs to live within a safe and nurturing community environment which promotes options and choices, underpinned by a person-centred, needs led approach.
The Regional Development Officer with Gaisce, Mary Yore, who presented the awards, says
“It was a fantastic achievement from all of them, I only got involved with the Hub this time last year so for them to receive their award within the year was just great and you could see how happy they all were to have achieved so much. So much of this is down to the fact that the young people have a great team supporting them at the Hub and of course their parents who are all very supportive. That makes a huge difference to any young person trying to earn their Gaisce award. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them because they’re going to move on now to work for their Silver award and hopefully the start of a new relationship between Gaisce and The Hub in Drogheda.”
Praxis Care strives to empower adults and children with mental ill health, learning disability or acquired brain injury to enjoy every day living, irrespective of the complexity of their needs.
